The FDA requires the registration of any facility or establishment that manufactures, processes, packs or stores food, beverages or supplements that can be consumed in the United States. In addition, establishments outside the United States must designate a US Agent for Communications with the FDA. The US Agent fulfills a different function than that of your importer, customs agent or trade association. The FDA communicates through the Agent to schedule inspections and other important regulatory matters.

DUNS and UFI

In 2016, the FDA announced that all drug and food facilities must submit Unique Facility Identifiers (UFI) as part of their FDA registration and renewal. Nowadays, the only UFIs recognized by the FDA are the numbers from the Data Universal Numbering System (DUNS), unique identifiers developed by the Dun & Bradstreet (D&B) credit office for business profiling purposes.

All food facilities must include their DUNS number in their FDA registration. Failure to provide an exact DUNS number may result in registration cancellation.
